My New Backup Solution →
I’ve been using Mozy for my online backups for the past few months. I was mostly happy with it, with a few grievances. For one, sometimes the Windows service would halt and backups would stop, and I was given no indication that my backups weren’t running unless I went to check the status.
Second, the fact that the service kept needing restarting at all was a little irritating.

More Reasons to Love Mr. Rogers
“Very frankly, I am opposed to people being programmed by others. My whole approach in broadcasting has always been ‘You are an important person just the way you are. You can make healthy decisions,’ ” Fred Rogers told the court.
Taken from Mr. Rogers’ testimony to US Congress over the “Betamax” case where broadcasters were trying to stop home taping by these new-fangled video...

The Numbers Game
Listened to an amazing episode of This American Life about a cop who tried to take on the corruption at his precinct. The cops weren’t taking graft but were issuing quotas to beat cops to make a certain number of arrests or violations, as well as downgrading major crimes like rape and robbery to misdemeanors. This was all in an effort to make their precinct’s numbers look better. It...

More Progress on Tournament of Monsters
Started getting a little stir-crazy with Eleanor and Erin out for the afternoon, so did some work on the Monster Tournament stats this afternoon.
A few months back, I did some work on a Python script to pit a monster against a monster over 100 matches and see who would come out on top. I reworked that script a little bit to pit every monster against every other monster and see how many wins...

Google Desktop search really changed things for me when it came out, letting me find anything stored on my computer no matter where it was hiding.
Now, there isn’t much that I actually do store on my computer. And I keep stuff all over. I can search in any individual service (Gmail, Dropbox, simplenote, Evernote) for something *if* I remembered which service that was in.
This thing...

Gmail Priority Filtering: I Called It Four Years...
So Gmail rolled out priority inbox filtering today, where it would put emails it thinks is important right at the top of your inbox, ahead of what it deems unimportant. From the post:
“As messages come in, Gmail automatically flags some of them as important. Gmail uses a variety of signals to predict which messages are important, including the people you email most (if you email Bob a lot,...

Round up of various community renting sites for once in a while things like power tools etc. Such a great idea. I really think we need to ween ourselves off the notion of owning objects for the sake of owning them. This is why I use the library and only rent movies. Hopefully I can start doing this with other objects too.

I’m happy to announce the Toronto Nerd Summit 2 - Nerds for Change.
** UPDATE - VENUE CHANGE - NOW AT THE POUR HOUSE IRISH PUB **
The turnout for the first summit was pretty small, but the great conversations and new acquaintances for those who came more than made up for it. We also played an ‘alpha’ version of the board game I’m working on. Thanks to those who made it...
